A Lodge Built to Endure

Blake Smith Lodge was built in 1933 as a substantial Texas retreat, designed with a scale and craftsmanship rarely encountered today. Massive East Texas pine timbers, native stone and carefully considered architectural details give the lodge its unmistakable character.

Nearly a century later, the original structure remains at the heart of Smith Ranch—still a home, still gathering generations beneath its roof.

Built With Character. Built to Last.

YELLOW PINE LOGS

The original specifications call for yellow pine logs, individually scraped, sanded, stained and varnished to create the lodge's distinctive exposed walls.

HAND-FINISHED CHINKING

Chinking between the logs was carefully constructed over metal mesh, built up with mortar and finished by hand—approximately two inches thick according to the original specifications.

NATIVE STONE FIREPLACE

The Great Room chimney was specified to be built entirely of native stone, with a firebrick-lined interior. Particular care was required in selecting the stone for the arches above the fireplace.

LOUISIANA CYPRESS

Massive Louisiana cypress trunks incorporated into the Great Room create some of the lodge's most recognizable architectural elements.

NATIVE STONE

Stonework throughout the lodge grounds the architecture in the materials and character of its Texas setting.

Architecture with a Sense of Place

Designed in 1933 by Houston architects H. B. Weaver and Lou Ault, Blake Smith Lodge was conceived as a substantial Texas retreat for Mr. and Mrs. Blake Smith. The original architectural plans survive today, providing a remarkable record of the home’s beginnings.

Deep rooflines, generous proportions, massive timbers and natural stone give the lodge its distinctive character—architecture designed for its setting and built with a permanence that can still be felt nearly a century later.
